Michael Jackson (not that one) was a British beer (and whiskey) writer who was arguably the first to bring beer journalism to the mainstream. He starred in the TV series The Beer Hunter for The Discovery Channel in 1993, and made a huge impression on brewers and drinkers around the world. A documentary about him, titled Beer Hunter was released in 2013 and those interviewed include such brewing greats as Sam Calagione (Dogfish Head Brewery), Greg Koch (Stone Brewery) and Charlie Papazian (founder of Brewers Association of America, American Homebrewers Association, and the Great American Beer Festival. His influence on the modern beer scene is undeniable.

He passed away too soon in 2007, before the craft beer scene he helped to create came to fruition. To commemorate his life and achievements, the Michael Jackson Award was created celebrating the “Best in Show” of American cask ale served at the Great British Beer Festival. Over the years some of America’s best craft breweries have won this prestigious award, and even getting nominated for it is highly coveted.

So obviously we couldn’t let the award get mothballed along with GBBF and are privileged to now host it at Peterborough Bee
